Definition
Detention is a charge by the shipping line for retaining a container outside the port terminal (e.g. at the importer's warehouse) beyond the permitted time. It starts when the container leaves the port and ends when the empty container is returned to the designated depot. Together with demurrage, it represents a significant logistics cost.
